In the movement of a flock of geese, each goose takes a turn at the front, at the point of the V. In that position, the goose bears the brunt of the wind resistance that is faced by the flock and pushes the pace for the rest of the flock. Each goose moves to the front in its turn, and each moves back in the line, also in its turn, to take some shelter from the wind. The stronger geese almost certainly spend more time in the front, perhaps pushing the flock even faster. Throughout this process, the flock moves ahead. Each individual can experience the work of pushing the flock forward as they can experience the relative earned rest while they move back in the flock.
